Will Prof. Wole Soyinka tear his Green Card?

Wole Soyinka is a Nigerian playwright and poet born in 1934. He was the first African to be awarded a Nobel prize in literature in 1986. Professor Soyinka has always been active in political matters, he is a critic of some Nigerian political leaders and was always at odds with military during the era of military regime. At some point, he fled the country for safety after Abacha declared a death sentence on him.

The well-achieved academician has taught arts, creative writing in prestigious schools around the world including, Harvard and Yale. During the presidential campaign of Donald Trump, the current US resident swore to destroy his green card if Trump became president of the country known to be the most powerful nation on earth.

On 9th November, 2016, Trump was announced President-elect of the United states to resume office as the 45th president of the US in January 2017. The internet then went agog with comments of Nigerians asking the Nobel laureate to tape a video of him tearing his green card as he earlier pledged.

According to reports, he responded to Nigerians saying he will not destroy his green card just yet which is a clear contrast to his first stance. He said: “Why don’t we wait until Trump actually takes office? I am just going about my normal commitments, but definitely not getting into any more commitments. Let’s put it that way for now.”
